Observation Narrative
Due to the very steep terrain and dense shrub layer, a quadrat was not established, but an area of approximately 400 square meters was estimated and surveyed. The area encompassed part of a steep bluff subtending the North Mayo River and dominated by Rhododendron maximum, mostly greater than 2.5 cm, and ranging to 5-10 cm DBH. The overstory consists of beech, red and white oaks, and cucumber magnolia. Beech trees here are about 65 cm DBH and other trees are 15-25 cm DBH. The ground is mostly devoid of herbs and herb cover was concentrated in a small area where there is no Rhododendron cover, an area about 1/3 the size of the sample area. This vegetation occurs along approximately 200 meters of riverfront and grades into a rich forest dominated by Fagus and Quercus rubra.
